Session 1 - CATALYZING PREFABRICATION THROUGH DESIGN to achieve higher performance in housing.
As industry bleeders you see the changes coming in the building codes and you’re likely wondering how you will still be able to differentiate yourself from the rest of the market. How can you grow your business while keeping your product affordable and still stay ahead of the curve? Productivity via prefabrication seems to be a lucrative innovation, but how do you get there without risking breaking the bank? For the 70% of builders in Canada who have 5 or less employees, what's realistic, what are the first feasible steps to get there, and how does this help the performance of the homes you build?
MODERATORS:
- Sonja Winkelmann, Senior Director, Net Zero Housing, CHBA
- Chris Williams, President, Avalon Master Builder
Speakers/Panelists:
- Kevin Lee, CEO, CHBA
- Keith Herring, Director, Modular & Construction Systems, CHBA

Session 2 - FINDING THE EMISSIONS SWEET SPOT. How much is too much?
The Net Zero Embodied Emissions target is on the NBC horizon for 2030. Builders and renovators are expected to figure out how to achieve Net Zero operational and embodied carbon emissions homes while still keeping them at a price point that the market can bear. Where are the industry leaders at, what role does the existing housing stock play, and how will a decarbonized grid and low/no emission materials help get us there?
MODERATOR: Chris Williams, President, Avalon Master Builder
Speakers/Panelists:
- Sonja Winkelmann, Senior Director, Net Zero Housing, CHBA
- Andy Oding, Vice President, Building Knowledge Canada

Session 3 - WHO'S DOING WHAT? And is it enough to get us there?
Adaptation and Resilience-related requirements will feature strongly in the 2030 NBC... but what's the government doing to help the industry prepare for these changes? What work is being done to ensure that resilient homes are also affordable? And how are the various departments/agencies working together to ensure all the new requirements can be integrated with one another? With the majority of builders being micro/small companies, they don't have the capacity to invest in conducting research and field tests. So how can we work together to find the most affordable and effective way to protect homes and their owners from the effects of escalating extreme weather events (resilience and adaptation) at the same time as reducing their environmental impact (mitigation)?
MODERATOR: Frank Lohmann, Senior Director, Building Science, CHBA
Speakers/Panelists:

Break & Demo Hub Networking
3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Session 4 - SAFE HAVENS. Protecting our assets and our families.
Extreme weather events continue to escalate and cause more and more property damage and losses. How can builders and renovators make homes more resilient and minimize these losses? Knowing what extreme climate hazard is the most predominant in the region you're building in is the first hurdle. This, and identifying the most cost-effective and impactful modifications for each climate hazard is what we still need to figure out. This session will provide insight into current efforts on providing affordable and resilient homes in a changing climate.
MODERATOR: Frank Lohmann, Senior Director, Building Science, CHBA

Session 5 - LEADING THE WAY. Meet 5 Builder Teams achieving Net Zero/Ready in Multi-Family projects.
In this "Affordable, Replicable, and Marketable Net Zero Ready MURBs" Project (2019-2024) each multi-family builder will showcase their approaches, construction models and learnings from this initiative. What worked, what didn't, and what successes and challenges lie ahead. From BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and from 2-unit stacked towns to community developments, hear from the boots on the ground as our industry addresses the need for more housing, leveraging panelization and modular technologies, all while leading and maintaining a path to Net Zero.

Session 6 - HOW LOW CAN YOU GO. Electrification on 100 amps?
To support decarbonization targets the industry is exploring electrification and the technology that demonstrates options to remain on existing or smaller electrical panels - but is it enough? What's the best approach for new construction, and what are the opportunities and limitations? How is electrification impacting deep energy retrofits and the infrastructure in existing communities? What technology, programs, and policies will allow the industry to move towards electrification with right-sized panels?

Session 7 - GOTTA KEEP 'EM SEPARATED. Compartmentalization for Multi-Family.
Where is it coming from? From semi-detached and townhomes to mid and high-rise construction, compartmentalization to achieve airtightness between units, as well as to the exterior, is a challenge. This was an applied research focus throughout the Net Zero MURB project. We'll hear from Mark Rosen and the evolution of the 'Rosen Factor' throughout this project to where it has landed in code. Andy Oding and Dr. Michal Bartko will present research findings from work with both Landmark and Avalon, correlating firewalls with target air compartmentalization. From the construction side, we'll hear from the MURB Project builders how compartmentalization is integrated into both modular and panelized solutions.

Session 8 - ARE YOU READY FOR THIS? What's next for scaling a Net Zero future.
Our Net Zero MURB builders have shown that Net Zero can be done for mid-density projects. So what are the paths that have been laid and what are the obstacles still to be overcome to allow for net zero construction to scale? Brett Cass, Technical Manager for CHBA's Net Zero Housing will give an overview of an exciting development in the Net Zero Home Labelling Program - the Alternative Compliance path to Net Zero Ready - that addresses the constraints faced by many housing types. Sneha Bernard & Andy Oding will highlight the key outcomes of the LEEP workshop on ASHPs to empower builders and renovators. For scaling, we need data and consistency. Dave Silburn, SHIFT Environmental, will join Tyler Wilson from SAIT to discuss their Guide to Energy Monitoring with lessons learned from the Net Zero MURB project. And to cap off this Net Zero Summit, Sonja Winkelmann will end the session with highlights from our growing educational and marketing offerings including support through our Codes Acceleration Fund initiative!
