Net Zero Leadership Summit 2021
Canada's Foremost Event For Net Zero Homes
CHBA has taken a leadership role in helping early adopters of Net Zero Energy Homes overcome barriers and voluntarily build to higher levels of energy performance. With the end of COVID still unclear, rather than wait until we can see each other again in person, we’ve decided to host a virtual Net Zero Leadership Summit this year. (And, looking on the bright side, there’s the added bonus of lower emissions from all the travel we won’t be doing.)
From Monday, November 22 to Thursday, November 25, CHBA will host the 2021 Net Zero Leadership Summit, a live interactive online event where participants will gain insight and explore the innovative, industry-leading efforts in Net Zero for both new homes and renovations. Participants will be a part of the dialogue - interacting and providing input during each session to work though the opportunities and challenges. Focused on valuable content and participant engagement, the Summit will convene leaders in the industry such as builders, renovators, energy advisors, product manufacturers, service providers, utilities, developers, as well as government, and academia from across Canada.
So that participants from across Canada can participate during business hours, and to reduce “zoom fatigue”, instead of two full days we’ve split the agenda across 4 days, with 2 sessions per day, and a half hour bio-break between them so you can refill your drink, have a bite, visit the head, go for a walk around the block, check your emails – or maybe all of the above! And because it’s being held virtually, it’s priced reasonably.
The agenda is guided by the nation-wide strategic action plan developed from the results of the last Summit, where priorities and stakeholders were identified to ensure a holistic approach is being implemented, and to support the industry with solutions and tools. Over the course of the event, you will have opportunities to engage with the other participants, speakers, panellists, and the Expo Hall exhibitors, offering you a deeper network upon which to build your Net Zero business opportunities. And, like last year, we’re going to have some hearty Canadian fun while we’re at it, eh!? (Get your cameras ready for the Great Canadian Photo Contest! The winner gets a complimentary pass to the 2022 Summit!)

New Study Results On Embodied Carbon in Materials For those of you who attended the last Summit, Chris provided a very informative presentation on the work he has been doing on the impact of embodied carbon in materials. His presentation was so well received that we invited him back to provide an update on his work, specifically the results of a new study that he completed for NRCan this year. Join us to learn about the main takeaways from this study, including what the material carbon emissions “range” is, how the material carbon emissions could be brought to zero or even be negative (net carbon storing) using conventional, code-compliant materials, and how reducing material emissions by one "tier" has a much larger impact on overall emissions than increasing energy efficiency by one tier in the NBC. |

SESSION 2: 3:00 – 4:30 PM ET / 12:00 – 1:30 PM PT
Industry Education Voluntary energy efficiency programs have always played an important role in informing the path of residential building codes in Canada. There has been a very consistent pattern of the codes following behind the voluntary programs, allowing the industry to “work out the kinks”, and instilling confidence in an approach before moving forward with code regulation. Currently, the innovators and early adopters are the holders of the most current knowledge. To be able to cross the “chasm” to the early majority we must disseminate this knowledge, shortening the learning curve and paving the way for the mass market. The challenge is to effectively apply what we already know and what we continue to learn, “en masse”. Join us for this session to learn what initiatives are bridging the knowledge gap and accelerating the industry's capacity to capitalize on Net Zero. Our panel will present and discuss the potential challenges and opportunities and will engage the audience in the dialogue.• Sonja Winkelmann will speak to the formal Net Zero Training opportunities, strategies to increase uptake, and the role of webinars. • Andy Oding will highlight the value of the Integrated Design Process (IDP) for shortening the learning curve. • Patric Langevin will provide an overview of upcoming LEEP/CHBA collaborations and will talk about the LEEP guides and tools that builders can use to get on the path to Net Zero/Ready. |

SESSION 1: 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET / 10:00 – 11:30 AM PT
New Perspectives On Old Homes Homes in Canada built between 1960 and 1977 consume an average of 342 GJ/year. Compared to new homes that consume an average of 105 GJ/year, that’s a big gap. Now imagine the opportunity to bring that down even further, to 45 GJ/year with a Net Zero Ready renovation. Older homes provide a significant opportunity to reduce energy consumption and GHGs. Are consumers even willing and financially able to do such a considerable deep energy retrofit? And how are deep energy retrofit programs being designed for renovators needs? Join this session to learn about the results of the Net Zero Reno Pilot, and hear about some unique projects and efforts in this space. • Sonja Winkelmann will speak to some of the key learnings from the CHBA Net Zero Reno Pilot, the work with the Appraisal Institute of Canada, and how to leverage the current incentives and financing opportunities. • Lisa Dockman will share the City of Edmonton’s innovative approach to rebate (Home Energy Retrofit Accelerator) and PACE financing (Clean Energy Improvement Program) programs that are designed to support homeowners on their renovation pathway to net zero. • Patric Langevin will talk about how LEEP is working with industry in BC to tackle retrofits, and Joe Geluch will discuss how panelization presents an opportunity for low carbon deep energy renovations. • Adam Corneil will detail his success with (and the opportunity in) deconstruction and reclamation. |

Resilience VS. Survivability; What Do Net Zero Homes Really do? The term resilience is increasingly being used in our industry. What does it really mean and do Net Zero Homes address it? What about the new concept of survivability? What does it have to do with resilience… if anything? Join us for this session to learn the difference between resilience, passive and active survivability, some of the solutions, and what one leading builder is doing to innovate in this space.• Frank Lohman will explain how key resilience aspects such as fire, flood, wind and hail are being addressed, as well as the potential insurance impacts. • Andy Oding will explain what passive survivability is and showcase an hourly analysis from the CHBA Net Zero MURB RD&D initiative. • Wil Beardmore will explain what active survivability is and provide details on how solar, storage and smart electrical panels help people shelter in place when the grid goes down. • Doug Tarry will highlight some of the innovative projects they’re working on in this space.

Live Interactive Expo Hall & Networking
Exhibitors will also participate in the live interactive Expo Hall & Networking session, taking place on Tuesday, November 23,
2021, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm ET. Like a real in‐person Expo Hall, attendees can visit each virtual “booth” in this live‐streamed
session, hosted by representatives from your company. Attendees can interact with you via the webcam and audio
functions as well as via the chat window, where they can ask questions and converse with you and other attendees. Each
virtual “booth” can host up to 50 people at a time, so you’ll likely find yourself creating many spontaneous conversations,
which could be the start of some great business connections.
We’ve dedicated this entire time slot to this live interactive experience rather than squeezing it into the break time,
because networking is such a key part of the event. The 90 minutes are for YOU, the exhibitor. While networking, attendees
will learn more about the products and services that are key to success with Net Zero Homes.
